Ontario Ministry of Research & Innovation

Scope: concept development and design of event materials (the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure (MEDEI) & the Ministry of Research and Innovation (MRI) were exhibiting at the 2016 BIO International Convention) to bring Ontario to prominence as an dynamic and inventive location. To capture investors in life sciences and health technology sectors’ attention and inspire them to reach out and discover the quality Ontario offers.

Deliverables: print ad, print directory, web animated gif ads

Design process

Starting with pen and paper — a process I often follow with conceptual work — I consolidated the main objectives in order to stay on target. I then did research to understand the industry, asking questions, such as “what is biotechnology?”. Then I brainstormed ideas and explored them further, with thumbnail sketches.

Next after choosing the concept, I created the visual assets for this project (which can be viewed in the gallery above) — using stock images as a base and customized them for my intended purposes. Finally, I combined the hand drawn items with the customized stock, to achieve the desired outcome efficiently.

The background of the ad was created using 3 stock images, which I chose for specific reasons. The precise, clean circles, in the metal image, were to radiate out from Ontario. The soft gradient blue image was chosen for it’s captivating colour and to add drama and dimension. Finally, the geometric line structure image, was chosen to add pops of light, to symbolize creation, formation, technology, biology and science.

The result of the photo compositing of the 3 images was a one of a king custom background, that not only adds a rich visual but one that reinforces the concept.

Ad design

Here is the final assembled result — the visuals symbolize action, science and innovation. With an international target audience, it was important to put Ontario “on the map”. The dark pop of colour on Ontario, the swirling custom drawn lines, the positioning of the headline and the radiating circles of the background create an infectious excitement about Ontario. The swooshing lines also lead the viewers eye, to the professionals being highlighted, and downward to the call to action, prompting viewers to engage.
